We respect your privacy, which is why we do not track anything personally identifiable while you use our Add-ins. We also believe in transparency which is why we are providing this very clear description of what gets logged while you use our add-ins.
We absolutely gather analytics about the Add-in usage to guide development, but only the following is logged for analytics with a time stamp and session ID*:
1. Country of User and Office Client version at Launch
2. Domain of User at Sign-in
(Only for Add-ins with Authentication)
3. Click Events
So what does this mean?
#1 Tells us in which regions are customers are located and what client software they use. We gather this to help locate app services close to clients and to prioritize localized experiences in the regions where people are using the add-ins, improving User Experiences. The information about the Office client informs development for specific platforms, like "PowerPoint on Android" or "Excel on MacOS".
#2 Tells us whether or not you are in a paid domain. If your business is licensing premium features, we need this to enable those features. If your business is not licensing premium features, the information is only used for informational purposes, e.g.: to verify which firms are testing or piloting the add-in, or just to know how many unique organizations are using it. It is not used to contact your firm (see "What are Session IDs" below).
#3 Is everything you click inside the add-in. This tells us which features are the most used, and how they are used. For example, a user launches CTX, changes dictionaries, Reads, then begins tagging. This information with time stamps and session IDs shows us how a user uses the add-in and how long they spend using each feature- or not!
*What are Session IDs & Time Stamps? The session ID is a random identifier assigned to you each time an add-in loads. It allows us to correlate usage events without using a permanent or individually identifiable value. The Time Stamp is just what it sounds like, a label indicating the time of the event. This allows us to see events in sequence and get an idea of how much time people spend using specific features.
As long as we are here, lets highlight some things that are never-ever logged for analytics:
Your name
Your user ID
The data that you interact with in your documents- your data is your data!
